A general-purpose mask that protects against germs, viruses, dust, air pollution and other harmful materials. It’s designed to be worn in healthcare and public environments such as schools, offices and restaurants.
Surgical face masks, also known as medical face masks or PPE, have an inner layer to prevent fluids and an outer layer for breathability. They’re used by healthcare professionals in hospitals, dental and isolation procedures, among others. Surgical masks also protect the wearer from contaminating their own mouth and nose, which can spread germs to patients and colleagues.
Understanding the Role of Disposable Surgical Masks in Healthcare
These masks can be used alone or with other protective gear such as gloves and goggles. They’re usually made of multiple layers of non-woven fabrics and are designed for a close fit with the face to prevent germs from entering the nose or mouth.
Unlike respirators, which are usually only a single layer of breathable fabric, surgical masks have more material and tend to be more rigid. Those differences can affect how comfortable they are to wear over long periods. A study that tested the efficacy of a range of surgical masks found that loosely woven cloth products offer the least protection, while layered finely woven products provide more protection than simple plastic surgical masks, and N95 and KN95 filters deliver the most protection.
